Areas of Your Home That May Contain Asbestos

Posted on

If you are doing home renovations and remodeling, you may already be thinking of asbestos removal services. This is especially true if you know of an area that contains the material. What many homeowners overlook are the other areas that can contain asbestos as well. Here are a few of the other areas of a home that may contain asbestos and what you need to know about testing and removal.

Wallpaper and Paint

One of the places that you may not check are rooms that contain old wallpaper and paint. Asbestos was used in many wall coverings along with lead. The wallpaper, especially if it is more than a few decades old, may contain higher levels of asbestos. Paint, even when painted over, can also contain high amounts that can leach through multiple paint layers. The areas can be tested with a scrape test or with a small sample of the wallpaper. If asbestos is present, asbestos removal services can be requested to safely remove the wall coverings and leave a clean surface for new options.

Exterior Siding

If your home has exterior siding slate-like tiles, they may contain asbestos. The tile can become brittle over time and start to flake or break off. As it does this, the dust from the asbestos enters the air causing severe breathing issues and respiratory concerns. A test of the dust can be done to see if asbestos levels are present. If they are the area can be tented and the tiles or siding removed. Once removed, asbestos removal services can remove the tiles from the property and dispose of them safely.

Popcorn Ceiling Tile

Popcorn ceiling is often a white or beige color ceiling that has a textured effect. It is blown into place and creates a layer over thin or modular ceiling tile pieces. The popcorn ceiling mixture does not currently contain asbestos. However, if the tile is older, then it may contain varying levels of the material. Tiles can be checked in the same way as exterior siding or wall coverings. If asbestos is present, the tiles will need to be removed, or the ceiling coating scraped off and removed by hazmat teams. The removal company can then remove any of the tiles or debris from the home.

By having these areas of your home tested, you can ensure there is no further asbestos threat. If you do find asbestos, make sure to notify the removal services company. They can handle all of the asbestos removal in one visit or series of visits to the home. They can also haul off the asbestos safely and without harm to you or your home.
